Thousands protest on streets of Dublin against plan to cut Irish debts

More than 100,000 people gather in Dublin to demonstrate against four-year austerity plan to reduce debts

More than 100,000 Irish citizens took to the streets of Dublin today to protest against the international bailout and four years of austerity.

Despite overnight snow storms and freezing temperatures, huge crowds have gathered in O’Connell Street to demonstrate against the cuts aimed at driving down Ireland’s colossal national debt.

So far the march has passed off peacefully although there is a huge Garda presence with up to 700 officers on duty working alongside 250 security guards for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Among the marchers there is deep anger that most of the more than €80bn (£67bn) from the EU and the International Monetary Fund will be given to shore up Ireland’s ailing banks.

Marching in the rally was Irish builder Mick Wallace who has had to lay off 100 workers due to the crash in the construction industry. Wallace said it was time the Irish became more militant.

“We should be more like the French and get onto the streets more often. Because our politicians go over to Europe and tell the EU that our people do not demonstrate, they don’t take to the streets. It’s time we changed that and openly opposed what is going on,” he said.

Placards carried by the marchers reflect the mood of anger and humiliation at having to be bailed out by the EU and IMF. One was designed to look like an estate agent’s billboard and read: “3,599 square miles For Sale. Full Planning Permission Granted”.

The protest has not halted at the GPO in Dublin, the scene of the 1916 rising where trade unionists and workers are denouncing the government’s cost cutting programme which will take €15bn out of the Irish economy over the next four years. Update: French Parliament Passes Pension Reform Plan

AHN News Staff

Paris, France (AHN) – Despite weeks of strikes and protests across the nation, French lawmakers on Wednesday passed President Nicolas Sarkozy’s fiercely-contested pension reforms in the National Assembly. The law will increase the minimum retirement age to 62 years old. According to a presidential advisor, Sarkozy will publish the law in an official gazette around November 15.

The approval came just a day before unionists planned one of the biggest strikes, which could bring the country to halt again. The ninth biggest strike is called for Thursday, which will include protest marches and strikes in over 100 towns and cities, while tenth day of family rallies is to be staged on November 6.

Prime Minister Francois Fillion has called on the countrymen to respect the law and bring themselves out of the current crisis. His comments came at a time when Socialists threatened to take the matter before the Constitutional Court.

“Everyone should know how to come out of this protest with responsibility and a mutual respect,” Fillon said.

Supporting the pension reform plan, Fillion said that increasing the legal retirement age was an important step aimed at protecting the welfare system in the face of the effect of demographic aging.

“Our fellow citizens can view the future of their pensions with more confidence,” he added. However, Socialist lawmaker Marisol Touraine was apparently not convinced with the proposal as she said it punishes the poor.

“You’ve spoken a lot about courage,” Touraine told Labour Minister Eric Woerth, who helped write the law. “But you’ve chosen to make the weakest pay, to attack those with the least means.”

London Firefighters Plan 47-Hour Strike During Fiery Holidays

AHN News Staff

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Members of the Fire Brigades Union in London are set to strike for 47 hours on one of the busiest periods in their calendar. The job walk-off is set to run from Nov. 5 -7 during two holiday celebrations traditionally marked by fireworks and flame.

The 47-hour window covers bonfire night and the Hindu festival of Diwali. Bonfire night is held every Nov. 5 to remember the infamous Gunpowder Plot in November 1605 when a group of Catholics planned to blow up the English Parliament and King James I over the bad way they were treated by the monarch. The Diwali festival, which originated in India, is held between mid-October to mid-November during which small clay lamps are lit to symbolize the triumph of good over evil.

Negotiations are scheduled Wednesday between government and the union in a bid to stop the industrial action, which was triggered by a planned change in shift patterns. Firefighters struck for eight hours Saturday and plan to hold another eight-hour strike on Monday. During the Saturday strike, contract crew manned the 27 fire engines instead of the usual 150 firefighters assigned to the vehicles.

Fire Service Minister Bob Neill criticized the industrial action because its schedule appears to have been deliberately timed to result in London residents being exposed to maximum risk.

FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said London firefighters do not want to engage in industrial action, but they have not much choice because they do not want to be bullied by officials.

Fire authorities stressed there are no budget cuts or job losses, but a planned reduction in the firefighters’ 15-hour night shift that would be added to the firemen’s day shift and more hours for community safety work and fire fighting training.

EU Commission to unveil Pakistan plan Thursday

BRUSSELS: The European Union’s executive Commission will unveil plans on Thursday to grant limited trade concessions to Pakistan to help it recover from devastating floods and maintain political stability, EU officials said.

The proposal will see EU tariff cuts on a large number of products imported from Pakistan and should boost Pakistani imports to Europe by 100 million euros a year, the officials said, less than the 300 million euros a year envisaged during a meeting of EU leaders last month.

Most of the trade concessions, which will be offered via a unilateral tariff waiver, will be on Pakistan’s textile exports, but they will not include bed linen, for which there is local production in the EU.

They will include tariff cuts on Pakistani industrial goods, including ethanol, officials said.

The plan foresees the trade breaks staying in place for three years, provided they are approved by EU governments, the European Parliament and the members of the World Trade Organisation, who must agree to unilateral waivers.

Pakistan, reeling from floods that have displaced millions, has said it urgently needs greater access to EU markets to help stabilise its economy, and has warned Islamist militants could exploit economic crisis and social instability.

EU leaders last month agreed Pakistan should receive unilateral trade breaks and tasked the Commission with drafting a plan.

Leaders also committed to giving Pakistan access to the EU’s enhanced trade regime known as GSP+, by 2014, provided it meets criteria on good governance and human rights.

The scope of trade concessions had been uncertain because of competition concerns of European industry groups and fears of opposition by India and Bangladesh, which also compete with Pakistan for exports to Europe. -Reuters
